"Snow Cruise" Pt 1 with Allie the Mtn Dog and NutnfancyToday's recipe for adventure: one female black lab, four to five feet of snow with more falling, a good shoeshoe hike in and out, knife and axe testing while setting up a survival shelter, and snowy firemaking in a remote area high in the Rocky Mountains! Taking place again in the "Nutnfancy Knife Clinic" (hey we haven't been here in awhile), the solitude we achieve in this winter wonderland is breath taking. But the work sure wasn't! Making a survival camp a reality in these conditions takes a lot work (hard to appreciate really until you do it!). Allie and I simulate a stuck-out survival situation in these harsh conditions and set up a survival campsite (using the portable Coghlans® brand orange plastic tube tent). This scenario was realistic and provided good gear testing opportunities. As I've done before, I show a lot of the work necessary to find and process standing deadwood into useable dry firewood with sharp edges that ignite more readily. We fall several dead trees in the process with the Cold Steel Trail Boss axe, Norse Tomahawk (very good performance for weight), and Sawvivor backpack saw and split a few other blades too (like the Dow Coated 3400A Ontario RAT-7 knife shown!). Some may say thinner wood could be used to build a fire but usually it is rain and moisture soaked therefore is an ureliable fire STARTING source. "High Skies" by Nutnfancy, Pt 3Get out and make an adventure with friends or family. Here "BuggetNuster," my longtime friend, take to a high Alpine area for just such an outing and further test a bit of gear and knives in the process. Of course I had to bring my other longtime friend and companion, trained in such terrain, "Allie the Mountain Dog" (my trained female black lab). She is my ever-present wilderness sidekick. We discuss gear, memories, friend relationships, tactical loadouts, flashlights, survival gear, gun, blades, and joke around as we make our way to a cool and scenic bench area for both blade testing, some firemaking, and a simple dinner. Usually deep in snow in November, this area was still waiting for the real snow to fall. This allowed our easier access to this area and we found the beautiful weather and our complete solitude up there much to our liking. Steep hiking and a somewhat technical descent were in store for us on the hike however. Mini-14 Trigger Job: "The Yoda G Mod"It only took me 28 years to finally get a really nice trigger in a Mini-14. It was something I always wanted to do but never go around to do doing...until now! Here experienced Impact Guns gunsmith Terry Gardner (call sign from me: "Yoda G") opens up his shop and candidly shows his technique on achieving a crisp, 2-stage 3.5 lb trigger pull on this Mini-14 Tactical model. Don't kid yourself though. While Terry makes it look easy and downplays the difficulty, there will be many opportunities for you to dick it up if you try it yourself (I've learned this on other guns myself). Without the over-travel stop, the cost is $65, shipping of your trigger group not included. Is it worth it? Absolutely. In hard cored Nutnfancy RunNGuns, this little Mini-14 Tactical (later DuraCoated in "Sagebrush" color by me) rocked out some impressive scores (results shown). Will it compensate for your bad technique? Nope. Trigger and breath control are always key to connecting accurately, stress or no stress. But this trigger job will make it easier to fire quicker and connect more readily at extended ranges (200 yds for example). And just as important, it will increase your pride of ownership in your Mini and impress your friends too. Piston vs DI Dilemma: The AR-15 Gas ChoiceDirect gas impingement AR-15s suck. Wait a minute, maybe that's piston driven AR-15s suck. Now that I have your attention I'll say they're both good and each has its own pluses and minuses that need your consideration. Long proven in many battles, the DI (direct impingement) M4/M16/AR-15 series are very reliable if maintained and lubricated properly. If it were not so it never would have lasted this long in US military service and many of the "it's broke, its needs replacing now" arguments ring hollow with me. That's not to say it cant have its problems and is failure-free. In the DI design by Eugene Stoner, the introduction of cyclic gas into the receiver makes things dirty and heats up critical components. That heat can accelerate wear and possible parts failure in extended full auto fire and makes cleaning a chore. Also running shorter barrel lengths on a DI gun is taxing to the system and it often needs heavier buffer, spring, and maybe even port adjustments to ensure reliability. Count on some tweaking. Also running a suppressor off a DI gun can cause debris and powder to be blown back into the users face, even with charging handles that incorporate deflection channels. The current piston AR-15s, like the Ruger SR-556 shown, promise to cure many of these problems. They transfer the heat and dirtiness up front at the regulator/piston mechanism, keeping the bolt cooler and cleaner. Nutnfancy SHOT Show: Blackhawk!Blackhawk makes quality stuff. I know because I've personally used it hard and it has never failed me. Also, unlike some other manufacturers who price some of their tactical nylon in the stratosphere, there are several examples of tactical nylon within Blackhawk nylon that remain affordable. This high value formula has brought success and allowed expansion into other tactical items such as knives, clothing, holsters, slings, gloves, lighting products (a bit $), and gun accessories. There's lots to see in the expansive Blackhawk 2010 SHOT Show booth and I do my best hitting the highpoints of the gear. But true to the Nutnfancy way, this isn't just a free mike for the manufacturer but a chance to discuss some criticisms, high points, and pricing of the Blackhawk gear as I see it. Our host is Blackhawk's VP of Marketing Terry Naughton and he is knowledgeable on his merchandise and did a good job of fielding the questions, even the tough ones, that I posed. With many of their items Blackhawk, adheres to their original high value formula and lots of their tactical nylon items are as good as any in the world and yet won't break your bank account. Their "Omega Crossdraw" and other vests are still outstanding (although prices have crept up over the years) and they come in excellent colorations (their shade of Desert Earth is the best out there).
