Campers, Start Your Engines!Last Wednesday encore campers got a treat when Judy Williams brought the Nascar pace car to Camp ASCCA for them to check out. She comes back to visit camp often, and last week she just happened to come in the Talladega pace car. Down On the Demo Farm :: The Horses Get A BathEvery part of Camp ASCCA's activities and programs needs maintenance and care, and the Demo Farm is no exception. And who on the Demo Farm is the most hardworking of all? The horses, of course! This afternoon, our three horses--Honey, Velma, and Slick--and Lady, our pony, cooled down with a soapy, refreshing bath. According to Katie and Kara, our farm program staff, this is protocol for the horses every two weeks. Katie says the horses love bathtime! Not only is the water a cold treat in the hot weather, getting lathered up and dried off is almost like a massage. After especially long days of giving horseback rides, sometimes the horses get a good hosing down before going into their stalls. Honey and Lady have been a part of the Camp ASCCA family for a few years now, but Velma and Slick are new this summer. They are trained to cooperate with handicapped children and will really enhance the therapeutic riding programs! For the past few days, the Demo Farm staff has been riding them and introducing them to their new surroundings. The staff wants to make sure they know Velma and Slick well before leading them around the ring.

ASCCA Staff is Trained for Both Adventure and SafetyOrientation for ASCCA Summer Staff is no joke! Besides routine, daily practices such as sleeping, dressing, and eating, we are also learning how to properly help campers enjoy different activities. Yesterday, the entire staff participated in Adventure Training after dinner. Outdoor Adventure Director Nathan Waters and Camp Director Matt Rickman led the training at the high ropes course and zipline. Using what we learned yesterday morning about pivot transfers, we practiced harnessing campers in different situations.

Campers have many reasons for admiring this member of the program staff! Everyone loves her cool accent, and she always has a great story to tell. But there is more to know about Jorja than this. Jorja plays softball at Auburn University and she found out about Camp ASCCA through a team bonding trip her coach brought them on three years ago.
