Maori Powhiri (Welcome) Queenstown NZOn the shores of Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown, New Zealand, we were welcomed by the local Maori with a "powhiri". It's a challenge. You're offered a feather or piece of fern and if you don't pick it up, it means you are there for a fight. So you pick it up. :-) The attendees were employees attending a regional, Asia/Pacific company conference. They were unaware this group was about to turn up in jet boats. Most people there were from around Asia or places other than New Zealand. They weren't aware of the correct protocol. The free Lindaur bubbly laid on had people fairly relaxed. 2008-11-09: I've uploaded more video from this event. Each is a video response to the one before it. twitter.com (Note: This video sat in a box on a video cassette for several years prior to the "invention" of YouTube. All bow down before YouTube. :-) ) The lyrics in Maori and English can be found here: folksong.org.nz

Queenstown, New ZealandRecorded January 18-20, 2007. Queenstown is a international resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island. It is built around an inlet on Lake Wakatipu, a long thin lake formed by glacial processes that is shaped like a staggered lightning bolt, and has spectacular views of nearby mountains. It has an estimated resident population of 26400. The video begins on the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown. Reputed to be the steepest lift in the Southern Hemisphere, the gondola carries visitors high above Queenstown to the Skyline complex located on Bob's Peak. The best vistas in the region are found here, spread out in a spectacular 220 degree panorama offering breathtaking views of Coronet Peak & The Remarkables, over Queenstown and across Lake Wakatipu to Cecil and Walter Peaks. Truly magnificent and awe-inspiring. The video then shifts to the Kawarau Bridge Bungy - home to the original 43-metre Bungy Jump. Next up are the beautiful views from Coronet Peak. Then I make a stop in Shotover Canyon to watch the infamous Shotover Jet screaming through the canyon. The video concludes in downtown Queenstown along the shore of beautiful Lake Wakatipu. Dart River SafariShot on January 22, 2007. The video begins on top of beautiful Bennetts Bluff overlooking Lake Wakatipu. The video then shifts to Glenorchy where I board the Dart River Jet Boat. The Wilderness Safari took us on a spectacular 1 1⁄2 hour Jet Boat journey through Mount Aspring National Park and the Darts ever-changing braided river system, where we were thrilled by the Jet Boat's capabilities including 360 degree jet spins. We were awed by the surroundings of breathtaking snow-capped mountains, ancient native forest, waterfalls and glacial valleys frozen in time. The video concludes with a native forest walk through the Heritage Trail at Paradise.
