JUNETEENTH JAMBOREE is a KLRU-TV production that embraces the concept of African American emancipation and the histories that derived from that moment. In commemoration of the anniversary known as Juneteenth, "The Negro National Anthem," originally known as "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," is often performed; this video is one such performance by the Innervisions Gospel Choir of the University of Texas at Austin.
This group began with the practice of early African American students at the school to socialize together with song. Almetris Marsh Duren, a school advisor to many of these young folks, organized their voices into the Innervisions of Blackness Choir in the mid-1970s. The choir survives today as the Innervisions Gospel Choir. This clip features an original arrangement, directed by Amanda Sargent.
