hi sean! ive seen a few of your vids. really like all the knife videos. rather obsessed with blades, bows, and natural stuff myself. thought this was a cool video. i noticed your daughter or you said the owls rarely eat other birds. found that interesting b/c the owls we have in the states like to prey on anything they can catch. being a turkey hunter, i know that turkey is one of the owls favorite meals. the turkeys certainly hate them. maybe it depends on the species. cool vid. keep em coming!
what if he bites?
I want to become her eagle =p~
He would deffiantely kill squirrel and rabbit. Owls are lazy hunters and will basically swoop down on any prey beneath them. Hawks on the other hand will actually hunt for prey.
He looks big enough to eat squirrels. If that is the case, I wish we had owls his size here in Texas to take care of the infestation. The squirrels here are quite fond raiding bird nests, and a few have attacked people at my university.
awww i want one..
He would come back eventually. But not until he had had a good look around or was hungry.
7:20 I laughed at the "Okay, get done with your business." look she had.
i like her accent >.<
she is cute :)
Thanks Sean for showing us that beautiful Owl
Lovely owl!
He's beautiful! Wow what an amazing creature an relationship
That's exactly how she works him. He is used for displays. Owls do not have a crop so every bit of food they get they become less hungry and less interested in flying. She often only gets three or 4 passes from him until he is unresponsive.
Ow ... ok. Well, thats still awesome! So when she flies him does she just let him go and lure him back with food then? I'm really curious how all of this works : )
Not really. He is more of a display bird. Meaning she uses him for shows, talks and educational events. Owls are notoriously difficult to train to hunt on command.
Wow ... so awesome! Does she hunt with him often?
What a beautiful bird! The owl's not too shabby either.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
chick is hot
In the UK we can only own and use captive breed birds. It's illegal to trap wild birds.
Amazing!
I, too, am a girl who is in the sport of falconry. Started in 2007, I'm in the US-- I've had 3 Red-Tailed Hawks (hunted successfully on cottontails and fox/grey squirrels) and I just trapped my fourth bird back in Dec., a female American Kestrel which I am going to hunt House Sparrows and European Starlings with.
Good luck with Mumble!
Thank you for this video. It was really fascinating to watch, and now I know what a 'raptor' really is. Keep up the good work!
I want that OWL! :(
Very enjoyable vid as always. Maybe in the future you can do a vid when you're out hunting the owl. It would be great to see. There are hawks in the forest preserve near where I live, I've been lucky enough to witness them pruning the local squirrel population a couple of times. It's excellent to see, especially so close to a highly populated area.
Regards to Lauren also, she did a fine job and shows the same enthusiasm for her craft that her father shows for his.
Nicely done.
Love your vids Sean. I love owls and this is one very beautiful bird. You must be very proud of your daughter as she seems very intelligent. She is very pretty as well, must take after her mum, LOL just joking. I am impressed with her knowledge of and dedication to these wonderful animals. Thank you for sharing with us Lauren.
